Katherine Hawkins graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1995 from the University of New York at Albany with a bachelors degree in English and Women's Studies. She also earned a Presidential Award for Undergraduate Research and a Women's Studies Excellence in Scholarship Award. Following sixteen credits of Masters study in English, Katherine redirected her efforts toward Civil War research, having come into a large collection of family papers. Consequently, she had done extensive research into the Third Regiment United States Colored Troops (3rd U.S.C.T.) of which her great-grandfather, Lewis Merwin Hobbs, served as Chaplain. After numerous extended visits to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and many other research facilities, Katherine has embarked on writing the history of the regiment. Examining the unit as a whole, she has also amassed over 650 enlisted men's biographies, and those of nearly 60 officers. She has utilized pension files, compiled service records, regimental and departmental records, as well as many contemporary newspapers, letters, and other historical texts. What has emerged is a substantial and detailed picture of a Civil War regiment of colored troops, the 3rd U.S.C.T. Education: SUNY Cobleskill, 1993, associate's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
